The author John Hoppner uses dark colors, clothing, and person’s facial expression to communicate the theme of someone important is lost. The author mostly uses dark colors to describe her outfit. She is wearing dark clothes and hat. Also if we take a look at her face we could see that she is sad. By these details I think the author is trying to say she is sad.

If we take a look at her outfit she is wearing dark clothes. At these times most of the girls didn’t wear dark clothes. The reason that they will wear dark clothes is someone is dead or funeral. So the author is trying to show that someone important for her is dead. Also the background of the picture has dark and grey surrounding her.
Then, her outfit is black but she is wearing white cloth inside. Instead she is wearing a black cloak on her white shirt. At 1700's they didn’t have fully black cloth. The author John Hoppner tries to tell that she is in someone’s funeral. She is also wearing gloves. Mostly in the 1700thif someone dies both men and women wore gloves. It was usually white colored which is the same color as the girl is wearing in the picture.
The author also uses facial expression to communicate the theme. The girl looks really sad and unhappy. She seems to be overwhelmed by sadness. She looks like she doesn’t even have power to do something. The author is trying to communicate that she has lost someone in her young age.
Overall in conclusion, the author is trying to tell the theme of losing someone that is important to you. John Hoppner uses little details such as background, facial expression, and colors to communicate the theme.
